What Our College Students Are Saying

If you would like to submit a story or quote about your experiences with K-grams, please do so on our newsletter sign-up page. Otherwise, here is just a sample of words from college students who have already been involved with K-grams!

General:

"What makes this program so good is the easyness. You just have to write the letter and deposit it in the correct box and the letters are delivered to you." .
.

"I loved the whole idea of having college students communicating with grade schoolers, what an original, creative, and educational (for both sides) program!"

"I grew up in Ann Arbor, and I would have loved it if there had been a program like this in which I could have participated in elementary school."

.
"As a freshman, I was glad to be able to get involved in something so great that was not so time consuming that I was stressed."   "It was great to see all those kids so excited about meeting us. I felt proud to be a part of something so wonderful."
.
"It [K-grams] was the best thing I was involved in this year."   "K-grams is, as I said, pretty snazzy."

Mentoring:

"I loved corresponding with an elementary student and hearing about what she was doing throughout the year. It helped me remember about my own elementary school experiences. I also loved the feeling that I was doing something to brighten up a child's day with my letters. It's a good feeling :)" .

"I think that it made a big difference to a lot of these kids for them to know that someone older in an influential position (college kid) would be interested in sharing in their life."

Community:

"I thought the program was GREAT. I came from a small school where contact with little kids was an everyday thing and I think that was what I missed most when I came to [college]. K-grams allowed me to have a little home in the big [city]. I thought the fact that the kids were SO excited to get our letters the most enjoyable thing in the program." . "I thought that it was good to be able to talk to the kids and get letters back from them. It's a lot like having a little brother or sister at home that you don't see so much anymore. Hopefully the kids would see us like older siblings and as good role models."
.

"I liked receiving mail every month and getting involved in community beyond our campus."

"I have meet so many nice people in my dorm through k-grams! It's amazing:)"

.
"When I first signed-up, I just wanted to have a low-commitment project, but the more I got to know [my elementary pen pal], the more I wanted to help with K-grams even more! "I really think that K-[g]rams has helped to bridge a gap between elementary schools and college."

Letters:

"Getting mail can totally make your day when you are away at school." . "I just love putting the letters on my wall for my whole hall to read and envy. They are so cute!"
.

"My favorite homework is writing my K-grams letter!"

"The letters are funny and they always brighten up my day. In fact, I have them hanging up in my dorm room."

.
"Here at [college], it's so easy to get caught up in making the grades that the really important things can be forgotten. But K-grams are the best kind of letters to receive every term!" "My pen pal (a second grader) and i draw pictures for each other. I really like the drawings he sends. i also feel like he's become a better speller and writer since we started writing which is cool to see. :)"
.
"I didn't actually think that a letter once-a-month would make me as happy as I am now whenever I check my box and it's there!"   "I just greatly enjoy receiving letters from kids and responding to their questions- for such a small time commitment it is a great reward."

A Special remark from a first-year parent:

"My daughter came home the other day very excited about her new UM Pen Pal. She went on and on about how nice her new pen pal was and wanted to know where Farmington Hills (her hometown) was. I thought [K-grams] was a great idea, but I never envisioned anything like this. You are all to be commended for taking on such a noble cause. You are all fine examples of what is good in this world. (GUSH, GUSH) Thanks for making my daughter's (and everybody's else's children) school day a little bit brighter."
