BookMARK:
(Mentoring
And Reading
with Kids) |
BookMARK is an incredibly enjoyable, simple, and
rewarding program that you can join through K-grams. This program
brings college kids into the classroom regularly to mentor and
tutor the kids. The initial commitment is simple, but then you
can do so much more!
The functions of BookMARK are to:
- help strengthen kids' reading and writing skills
- develop their understanding and usage of language
- help them with special assignments
- test their learning comprehension
- establish a consistent, reliable relationship
- challenge their analytical thinking
- encourage them to improve their personal best
College students look forward to their BookMARK sessions just
as much as the kids do!
"I just went to BookMARK for the
first time today. It was awesome! We made these cool poems. Some
of the kids finished early and we spent the rest of the time reciting
lines from the movie Shrek. It was so funny, they knew ALL of
the words! ... and so did I."
- DeShawn,
Engineering College Senior
"When I was tutoring on Monday,
a little boy came up to me at the end and shook my hand. He said,
"Joel, I really want to thank you for helping me on my reading."
This brought a smile to my face."
- Joel, weekly BookMARK volunteer
"I LOVE reading books and playing
games with the kids in BookMARK. I want to do it more next semester!
It's the highlight of my week!! =)"
- Cindy, weekly BookMARK volunteer
Safety & Quality
One of the primary objectives of K-grams BookMARK is to create
safe mediums for students to share and exhange one-on-one learning
experiences. While supervised and directed by the teachers, the
college volunteers have the flexibility to employ strategies to
help the kids learn. Not only are kids achieving new academic
heights through increased exposure to new learning styles, but
they also increase their self-esteem and ambition as they develop
new friendships with college buddies.
Flexibility - BookMARK offers a plethora of options to
those involved.
- College volunteers have the option to make weekly or monthly
commitments to the classrooms.
- Teachers have the ability cater the program and those involved
to their individual classroom needs.
- College organizers can host BookMARK in all of their K-grams
schools, so their pen pals have a direct route to volunteer
in the classrooms
